The private health system employs over 160,000 health care workers, including those working in primary healthcare; general practice, allied health, community pharmacy, specialist care, diagnostic services, private hospitals and the disability sector. The private health sector invests a large sum of money to fund their services. However, the Commonwealth and states (and territories) also contribute a significant amount of money to fund the private health sector. For example, the Australian Government is also regarded as the source of funds for the contributions it makes to private hospitals via the private health insurance premium rebates.
