Thank you to all HWU members that signed the union’s petition last week calling on the Victorian Government to fund an allowance for non-clinical public hospital workers in recognition of their hard work during this current and ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Nearly 4000 members signed the HWU’s petition calling on an allowance to be paid.

The good news is that the Victorian Government has listened. Your efforts have made a difference!

An allowance will now be paid to non-clinical workers who have a patient-facing role within our public hospitals. This includes the vast majority of our members working in a range of classifications, such as Cleaners, Security Officers, PSA’s, FSA’s, Orderlies, Technicians, Ward Clerks, Receptionists, to name just a few.

The new “Hospital Surge Support Allowance” will be in place from 11 October 2021 until 10 February 2022. This is effectively an 18-week period, meaning a full-time non-clinical public hospital worker has the potential to earn an allowance of $1800 over the said period.

The bad news is that not every non-clinical public hospital worker will receive it. The HWU believes all public hospital workers play an important part in our hospital system and that all non-clinical workers should receive this allowance. We will continue making representations to the government so ensure this happens. We want this fixed. That’s only fair.

Today, the HWU has received information from the Victorian Government about the allowance. (Please click on the attached document below for more detailed information).

Patient facing non-clinical workers on-shift in Red Zone areas will be eligible to receive an allowance of $20 per shift. Patient facing non-clinical workers on-shift in Amber Zone areas will be eligible to receive an allowance of $15 per shift.

The HWU continues to be in discussions with the Victorian Government about what constitutes ‘patient facing’. The Department of Health will be providing further and more detailed information soon. We don’t want any member who should be entitled to the Hospital Surge Support Allowance missing out because of interpretation by hospital service providers.  We will update members as soon as more detail becomes available.

Thank you once again to all members who signed the HWU’s petition. Your efforts count.  We will keep fighting to ensure all non-clinical workers receive this Hospital Surge Support Allowance. Because together, we are always stronger!
