Big Win for Melbourne Pathology Workers

IN-PRINCIPLE AGREEMENT REACHED: HWU NEGOTIATES 14.5% PAY RISE FOR MELBOURNE PATHOLOGY WORKERS.

Dear HWU member,

The Health Workers Union (HWU) has been fighting hard to lift the wages of Melbourne Pathology workers.

In a negotiation meeting this morning (17 April 2019), the HWU reached an in-principle agreement with Melbourne Pathology.

This is a good deal and is a vast improvement on the last pay deal offered by Melbourne Pathology. The new offer guarantees real wage growth over the life of the agreement, with wage increases above projected inflation over the next four years. The current annual inflation rate is 1.8%.

Wage Offer

3.5%      (First  full pay period on or after 11 March 2019)

2.5%      (First  full pay  period on or after 1 July 2020)

2.5%      (First full pay period on or after 1 July 2021)

3%         (First full  pay period on or after 1 July 2022)

3%         (First full  pay period on or after 1 March 2023)

Note: these increases are on top of the 4.5 per cent increases the Union has get you since October 2017 (2 per cent on October 2017 and 2.5 per cent in July 18)

All up, this means the HWU has secured 19% wage increases for Melbourne Pathology workers in total since the campaign for better wages began.

NOTE: Pay increases are usually only made when the agreement is ratified by the Commission. This can take some time. But, because we have negotiated pay wage increases from specific dates, the increases must be back paid to employees once the agreement is ratified.

The proposed agreement will also see approximately 20 per cent of Pathology Collectors and 50 per cent of Clerks benefit from uplift in classification changes. This means many workers will get additional increases in their wages when they are translated into a new classification. To assist in this process, a translation table will be included in the agreement. More information will follow in relation to these changes.

Allowances

  • Shift allowances etc will increase in line with the wage increases.
  • Meal Allowance will be adjusted in accordance with any varied rate in the applicable Modern Award.
  • Laundry Allowance will be adjusted in accordance with any varied rate in the applicable Modern Award.

Voting Timetable

This proposed workplace agreement will need to be voted on by all Melbourne Pathology workers. The HWU recommends you VOTE YES.

The proposed voting dates are listed below. Your employer will send you more information about voting.

13 May 2019     Circulate the Agreement  and associated materials

24 May 2019     Open the Ballot

30 May 2019     Close the Ballot

If the vote is successful, the proposed Agreement will then proceed to the Fair Work Commission to be ratified.

As discussed above, pay increases are usually only made when the agreement is ratified by the Commission. This can take some time. But, because we have negotiated pay wage increases from specific dates, the increases must be back paid to employees once the agreement is ratified.
